Behavior/Nutrition and Allergy Consultations

Consultation appointments are longer and more intensive  to obtain all key information and discover the root cause for the complaint.

Puppy Training/Behavioral

Puppy visits are considered part of these appointments since there is so much to go over with a new addition, such as crate training, feeding schedule, and socializaton. If we can get off on the right foot with a new puppy addition, then they will be a well mannered addition to the family and to our practice.  It is recommended that all puppies undergo training or behavior counseling, especially for first time dog owners. We can assist you in the training process for your puppy. Puppies are not the only ones who need training, however. Many adult dogs need to undergo behavior counseling as well. They may have developed some bad habits like begging for food at the table or jumping up on guests. Some dogs display aggressive behavior toward people or other dogs. This can be especially true for dogs that were previously homeless or had neglectful owners. Behavior counseling can help to correct these behavioral issues with training and, in some cases, medication. If you are concerned with your dog's behavior consult us. We can either set up behavior counseling appointments here in the office, or direct you to experts that can provide the help you need.

Nutrition is overwhelming for owners since there are many different types of food available for your pet, and each has its own benefits. You should ask your vet which particular food is best for your pet. The food your pet eats depends on their age, size, breed as well as other factors. If your pet has a health condition such as kidney disease, heart disease, cancer, stomach ailments, or obesity there are prescription diets available to help them combat their ailment. Your vet has extensive knowledge on this subject and can prescribe the best food for your pet.  We recommend and offer Royal Canin line of diets. The Early Care line of diets is specific for size of breed, age of breed, and certain issues that are common in that breed. The prescription line of Royal Canin diets is specific for the disease diagnosis. Certain diseases can be well managed by diets alone.

Skin Allergies causing itching, chewing, rubbing face, and licking feet is one of the most common complaints owners bring their pets into the veterinary hospital. If not addressed in a complete approach most of the allergies and concerns will continue unresolved.  Skin allergies that are most common in our area are 1/flea allergy, 2/Inhalant allergies{ atopy }, and 3/Food Allergies. Not only do ALL the allergies have to be addressed, but all secondary infections. At SFAH, we have a special interest in skin cases and allergies, so close communication and followup is key to the success of this frustrating, non curable, but treatable disease.  We offer complete allergen testing via Spectrum for 55+ inhalant allergens and food allergens, to get to the underlying cause to desensitize through immunization therapy.
